Tax Deductions for Retail Assistants

Some deductions that may be available to retail assistants include:

  • Memberships to unions and professional associations;

  • Cost of purchasing, maintaining and laundering compulsory uniforms;

  • Tools and equipment (deductible if less than $1,000 or depreciable if over $1,000) as well as any costs incurred to insure them;

  • Costs of till shortages the employee is required to make up (note, employers have no right to force you to make up any shortages, and you should seek advice from your union if they try).

Retail assistants may also be entitled to general tax deductions that are not work specific, such as investment deductions or car expenses deductions.
